Can my peke eat carrots?

Postby totz512 on Sat May 17, 2008 9:20 pm

I was wondering if my Pekingese can eat cooked carrots, and also lettuce?

Cooked carrots yes. Raw carrots no. Lettuce is ok too.

Also vegetables shouldn't be more than about 10% of the total daily diet. Dogs are omnivores yes, but their main fuel source is animal protein, meaning they're predominantly meat eaters. Their bodies aren't optimized for utilizing the nutrients in vegetable sources so just be sure you're not filling your dog up too much on them.

It's good you're asking though. Some people just give their dogs anything assuming it's ok, while there are so many foods seemingly mundane that could poison a dog.

OK that's pretty much what I figured. She just loves carrots for some reason LoL! I'll try to keep the veggies to a minimum though as you said.

Thanks!

eK9, why wouldn't a peke be able to eat raw carrots.

I know many people (vets, dog trainers, fellow kennel club members, myself) who feed carrots raw. Infact raw carrot was recomended by our vet as a low calorie option for training.

Yes I have to agree. I'm not sure what the problem with raw carrots would be as long as they don't try to wolf them down. Even then, you can cut them up small. We feed all four of our dogs raw vegetables including carrots in small amounts because they're high in vitamins. Cooked carrots lose most of all their nutrients. Steamed have a little more. As was said, dogs are omnivores and it's good for part of the diet to be vegetables and grains. But raw would be preferable nutritionally....even for we humans. :)

I ditto that - Chewie eats raw carrots, yum yum. A thin slice for a reward or a sprinkle of shreds on his food. Raw carrots are better than those dog treats in the grocery store loaded with sugar and other questionable ingredients.

The boys won't touch carrots, but Princess loves them. She also loves to eat apple peels too. Both she and Squeeky also love to eat oranges. But no one will touch any leafy greens-like typical kids!
