Umbilical Hernia

Postby Pancho on Tue Feb 09, 2010 11:50 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forum, and I'm so happy I found this community... hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue.

I just noticed a protrusion on the wall of the abdomen of my 10 weeks old peke; I guess it is an umbilical hernia. It's strange that I had not noticed it before, but it's about a size of a dime. I'm worried about this situation, he is so young and I’m not sure I want him having surgery unless it's a must. I've read about entrapment of the bowel stopping the passage of food, as well as cutting blood supply that eventually kills the entrapped tissue. All of this sounds horrible and frightening, I have an appointment to take Pancho to the vet next Friday, but I'm not sure I should wait that long. Has any here dealt with an umbilical hernia? If you have I would greatly appreciate your comments!

Thanks!
Pancho

I am sorry that your peke is suffering. But I have no idea about umbilical hernia to give you a wise advise. However, I am sure my other friends on this forum will be able to assist you with suggestions! I hope everything turns just fine.
I won't leave my pet insurance. it saved Yujun :-)

My Sassy (pet shop peke of 16 yrs, RIP) had an umbilical hernia, discovered during her first vet visit (at about 10 weeks). It was a long time ago, so I don't recall all of the details. But I know that although it wasn't considered a dire emergency, surgery was considered a necessity, and it was completed without incident.

My male Peke had an umbilical hernia. The vet repaired it while he was being neutered (only one round of anesthesia) at about a year and a half. Umbilical hernias are pretty common, but (from what I have learned) most do not require immediate attention.

I have 2 pekes (9 months and 1 year) who have this hernia. After much research I have found that it is pretty common in small dogs. It comes from cutting the umbilical cord too short. Get 2 opinions before surgery. Unless you plan on breeding your female peke, most times it will resolve itself. Opt for surgery only if it becomes necessary. My vet isn't too concerned about my babies hernias until I breed my little girl.....if I do. :)
